Guitarist, vocalist, and composer Jon Garner is a lifelong disciple of swing-era American jazz and hot club music from 1930s France. He began his jazz education by learning Lester Young’s saxophone solos from early Count Basie records. It was from these same records that he first heard Billie Holiday and the magic of voice as a horn in music. Soon after he came across guitarist Django Reinhart, father of gypsy jazz, and his path was set. He earned a B.Music in Jazz Studies from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and a M.Music in Jazz Studies from San Diego State University.
With a wide range of musical tastes, Jon has learned and performed in almost every genre imaginable over the years, from his earliest punk rock days, through Americana/Folk, Latin, Blues, Classic Rock, Classical, Contemporary Jazz, Bebop, Swing, New Orleans Trad Jazz, and his obsession, Django jazz, currently known as Gypsy Jazz.
Jon is also an educator and has published a very successful book called A Crash Course in Jazz Rhythm Guitar: For Large Ensemble and Small Group Combo. He maintains a private teaching studio and works as a guitar instructor for Palomar College.
His current mission is to spread the joy of pre-war swing and Django-jazz music, believing it to be the perfect balance of art and fun. It is accessible to listeners of all backgrounds and joyful to perform. Jazz that can be appreciated in intimate gathering, a concert hall or on the dancefloor.
